GB Water Polo Blog Update: 14th January

14th January 2013

Most of players have been in action this weekend with a mixed bag of results. We will start in Germany where Jake, Sean and Fran all had games.

SV Bayer 08 Uerdingen  17 – 3 SC Wedding

An easy win for Jake’s team from Uerdingen consolodates thier third place in the table. “We started strongly and were leading 8-0 at half time. After that we were always in control and saw the game out comfortably” says Jake. Jake scored twice.

Waspo 98 Hannover 15 - 6 SV Weiden

Sean Ryder had a tough away fixture in Hannover (involving a six-hour minibus trip!) and found their opponents too strong. Weiden were in the game at half time with the scores tied at 4-4, but their LEN Cup participant counterparts pulled away with a 6-0 third quarter and effectively ended Sean’s teams resistance then.

Sean comments: “We have had a new coach come on board this week and its going to take a while to adjust to the new regime. Hannover’s greater experience provided them with an edge we couldn’t overcome after the 1st half. I’m hoping for a better performance next week.”

SV Bayer 08 Uerdingen 22 - 6 SG Neukolln Berlin

Fran Clayton’s team smashed their opponents scoring 22 goals in the process. With nine wins out of nine they are leading the league by some margin. Fran scored six goals to bring her tally to 32 for the season so far making her the fourth highest scorer in the league.

Navarra 10 - 9 Saint Andreu

Sean King’s new team gained an important victory against a much improved Saint Andreu. “We were winning 5-3 at half time and seemingly in control of the game as we still lead 7-6 going into the last quarter. But they scored three unanswered goals at the beginning of the fourth so it was great to pull it back and win”.

Sean scored a man up with four minutes to play which was followed by two more quick goals which was enough to clinched victory.

Catalunya 8 - 9 C.N.Barcelona

Rob Parker and Ciaran James’ team narrowly lost the Barcelona derby. Ciaran said about the game: “It was very close and we were leading the whole game but didn’t have anything left in the final quarter to kill the game which they took advantage of to come back. It was disappointing but we are a young team and will learn from games like this.” Rob top scored for Catalunya with three goals while Ciaran scored one.

Real Canoe 13 -  12 Mediterrani

Ed was unable to prevent his team from losing in Madrid by one. “We attacked well throughout the game but our six on six defence was really sloppy – we conceded four goals from their centre forward and four goals from counter attacks. Looking to build on that first game of 2013 when we face CN Catalunya next Saturday.”

C.N.Saint Feliu 4 - 19 Mataro

An easy win for the girls away to Saint Feliu. Ciara scored three goals, Chloe two and Frankie one.

Nice 7 – 7 Douai

A must win game for Jack Waller and Nice disappointingly ended in a draw. Nice were 6-4 going into the final quarter but lost it 3-1. The main problems were a one from nine man up conversion rate and a brilliant performance from the Douai keeper which proved to be the teams downfall. Jack finished the game with one goal.
