Support our GB teams and the Olympic Creed
Since January 2009, the British Water Polo teams have been operating under the knowledge that funding for the World-class part of the sport has been cut.
Although in December 2009 UK Sport announced an increase of funding from 2009 to 2013 (leaving the sport with £2.9m), supporters of the sport have put in place ways to make additional contributions to support our athletes.
Friends of Water Polo was established with two initial objectives:
1. To lobby for sufficient funding to enable competitive GB squads to participate in the men’s/women’s events in London 2012
2. To put in place fund raising initiatives to provide continuity and certainty in the future funding of our sport's development at every level.
In February 2009 Friends of Water Polo agreed with British Swimming that as an interim measure it would fund the men’s team from April to September (inclusive) 2009 to enable the squad to participate in the Europeans in September. This has meant a financial commitment of £25,000.
Thanks to generous donations, the group reached £24,000 in October 2009. You can still learn how you can help Water Polo by visiting www.friendsofwaterpolo.co.uk
Friends of Water Polo have also lodged a petition with 10 Downing Street to ensure there is sufficient funding to enable Great Britain to field a men's and a women's Water Polo team at the 2012 London Olympic Games. The deadline to sign up to this petition is 02 January 2010.
The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.
