Dublin Cup blog: Brits finish Olympic warm-up against Romania
8th July 2012
World class programmes manager Joanna Wray is with the British Gas GBR Men’s Water Polo team as they prepare for their Olympic appearance at the Dublin Cup.
We finished our tournament against Romania on the final day in Dublin.
Q1: Sean King got us underway by winning the swim-off.
Romania got the first goal with a shot from Radu in CF. It was a difficult start with our boys going 3-0 down but great work with Ciaran James putting in a good ball to Adam Scholefiedl in centre, drew a penalty. Alex Parsonage stepped up and bounced it in.
GB settled in to the match and the defence began to work well. A quick counter by Romania led to their penalty which was converted. Glen Robinson had a Romanian arm around his neck and his marker was excluded but we couldn't take the advantage and the quarter ended 5-1.
Q2: After two more early goals against GB, Cristian Iordache (head coach) called a time-out. The boys were feeling the brutality of playing four of the best teams in the world in three days and with this last game they weren't at their best.
At last, Rob took an outside shot and got us a goal, making it 10-2. but Romania score one last chance before the end of the quarter and the score was 11-2 at half-time.
Q3: A change of GK sees Ed Scott take over from Matt Holland and he took his first shot with a good solid save. A good pass into the centre by Craig Figes gave GB a penalty and the captain Craig took the responsibility and scored.
Some strong work from Rob Parker at CB gets him a punch for his effors which at least gave us a man-up but the GB shot was tipped over by a player. But on another man-up, some nice work round the arc created space for Ciaran to slot it in on the near post.
Another man-up by the boys nicely worked around, opened up the gap for Mike Bourne to nail it in and it's 15-5 at the end of the third quarter.
Q4: A good ball in by Glen to Jack Waller drew an early exclusion but while we scored, the goal was disallowed with the ball passed into 2m.
Ed throws the ball three quarters of the pool for Alex on a counter and he was up for the task to put us to 15-6.
Defence was more solid in this quarter and we countered and got another exclusion. Sean King slotted it in the goal to get another back.
Romania went on the counter shortly after but Ed got an awesome block in to put us back in attack. The match ended 17-7.
Great Britain 7 - 17 Romania
GB scorers: Ciaran James (2) Alex Parsonage, Rob Parker, Sean King, Craig Figes, Mike Bourne
After the game, head coach Cristian Iordache said: "It was a very interesting tournament from all points of view.
"The competition came exactly at the right time for the last adjustments, with four teams in the same group in the Olympic Tournament plus Croatia, another team aiming for the gold medal.
"For our team was a fantastic opportunity to step up in terms of experience of playing at top level.
"Organisation was at very high level, water polo being very well received by Ireland, who proved that has a great potential of organising top level competitions.”
