Rumble in Russia: women’s GB team Kirshi Cup blog
The Kirishi Cup runs from 26-30 May. The senior women’s GB Team started against the host nation Russia. For updates from the games read below.
GB versus Russia
It all started with promise for GB with the team being very competitive. By half time it was just 3-6 to Russia.
GB was still competing well and creating chances, but in the end the team’s finishing let them down. Russia, on the other hand, scored all their opportunities.
The final result was 15-4 to Russia, but Szilveszter Fekete, the women’s head coach, told swimming.org: “The result really did not reflect the game which was a good competitive game with GB playing strongly.”
GB versus Canada
Another strong game for the senior GB women's team in the Kirishi Cup in Russia. Fierce competition throughout the first three quarters ensured that by Q3 the score was 3-2 to Canada.
However, the GB team failed to finish a run of man ups leading to the team losing 9-5. GB Water Polo World Class Programmes Manager Joanna Wray told swimming.org that the cup was turning out to be "...a great competition against great teams".
GB versus Germany
A much closer game to finish off the competition, with GB leading for a while at 7-5. However, Germany stormed back to go 10-7 into the lead. Then GB found their pace again and pulled the score back to 12-11.
The fast paced game saw both sides score another goal each in the final quarter and then with a few seconds to go GB missed their final attack of the competition to finish the game 13-12 to Germany.
