Barrow boosts Rio hopes with British gold

Sarah Barrow boosted her hopes of being selected for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games by claiming the 10m Platform title at British Diving Championships 2016 in Sheffield.

The Plymouth diver made her Olympic debut in London four years ago, finishing fifth in the 10m Synchro with training partner Tonia Couch.

But with Coach paired with City of Leeds’ Lois Toulson for the 2016 season, Barrow – who won the European 10m title in 2014 – has been concentrating on the individual event to secure her selection for Brazil.

And the 27-year old did her chances no harm by romping to the national crown, winning the prelim on 320.80 before securing gold in the final on 347.90.

“I’m really happy with that result,” said Barrow. “It’s been a tough time coming back from injuries but having two years of injuries and having to stop and start with my diving was tough.

“But this time I felt like I came back properly and I spent some time up in Leeds with the physios and worked really hard to come to this result.

“I’ve worked really hard to make sure I was where I needed to be. I stuck at my diving. I have a good mindset and I feel like that showed today.”

Dive London’s European bronze medallist Georgia Ward won silver on 323.85 while City of Leeds’ Ruby Bower collected bronze on 281.40.

Laugher cruises to 3m title

World bronze medallist Jack Laugher had no problems landing the 2106 British 3m Springboard title, scoring 489.25 for gold.

Improving on his 473.60 for silver at last month’s European Championships in London, the 21-year old City of Leeds diver lead throughout the final, scoring over 80 points for his first four dives on his way to his fifth British 3m crown.

“It means a lot to be British Champion,” said Laugher, who also won 3m Synchro gold at the Europeans this year. “It means a lot to regain my title after being forced to miss the National Cup in January because of injury. To do a good performance makes me happy too.

“My season has gone well so far. I performed well at the European Championships where I won gold and silver so I will hopefully be in contention for that selection for Rio next week.”

Jamaica’s guest entry Yona Knight-Wisdom scored 421.00 to finish second while City of Sheffield’s Freddie Woodward joined Laugher on the podium with silver on 404.05.
