The competition will be 20 years since Manchester 2002 – the last time the Games were held in England.
London is the only other English city to have hosted the Games, staging the second British Empire Games in 1934.
A defining moment for this truly Commonwealth city
“We warmly congratulate Birmingham and England on today’s announcement,” said CGF President Louise Martin.
“It is a defining moment for this truly Commonwealth city.
“With its rich history, cultural diversity, youthful dynamism and ambitious spirit, Birmingham embodies all that we cherish about the Commonwealth.”
The English diving team for next year’s Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will be selected after the British Diving Championships 2018 in January.
