Bower defends title on opening night in Dresden

Ruby Bower completed a quickfire golden double with victory on the opening night of the Dresden Youth International Meet 2017.

The City of Leeds diver scored 387.40 to defend her Group A Platform crown in Germany.

The result came just 10 days after the 17-year old won gold in the same event at the British Junior Elite Championships in Plymouth.

While Bower ended up on top after the final, she had only qualified in 10th from the prelim, with British teammate Emily Martin (Southampton) progressing in first.

But the Leeds diver saved her best optionals for the final, scoring 234.35 for her four dives to finish more than eight points clear of the field.

Martin wins silver for English one-two

Martin made it an English one-two on the podium as she handled the pressure of diving last in the final.

The 16-year old scored 216.90 for her four dives to finish on 379.25, with Australia’s Nikita Hains third on 372.10.

While Bower and Martin were the only English medallists on day one in Dresden, Holly Waxman was less than five points off the podium in the Group B 1m Springboard.

The City of Bradford Esprit diver scored 308.20 after the final with Russia’s Uliana Kliueva taking the third spot on the podium on 312.95.
