Evelyna Johnson wins Southampton's first gold

Evelyna Johnson won Southampton’s first gold of the 2015 ASA National Age Group Diving Championships with victory in a dramatic Group C 1m Springboard event.

With one round of dives to go, there was just 1.9 points between the top three with Johnson third behind Crystal Palace’s Josephine Zillig and yesterday’s platform champion Eden Cheng, also of Crystal Palace.

Getting on the podium yesterday yesterday definitely gave me more confidence for today.

And while Shamrock Diving Club’s guest entry Anna Power ultimately scored highest on 198.75, it was the 12-year old Southampton diver who emerged with the ASA national title after the sixth and final round of dives, taking gold on 196.55.

Zillig – who lead into the last round – took silver on 193.35 while Cambridge Dive Team’s Elora Graham managed to jump ahead of Cheng in the rankings to claim bronze on 191.05.

“I got a silver medal yesterday so I was pretty proud to win the gold today,” said Johnson.

“Getting on the podium yesterday definitely gave me more confidence.

“Platform is usually my favourite event, I don’t really like it in training but it seems to go well in competition – I don’t know why!”

Eaglestone holds off Brown’s challenge in 3m

There was also a close finish to the Girls Group D/E2 3m Springboard as Crystal Palace’s Callie Eaglestone claimed her third gold of the Championships.

Star Diving’s Tilly Brown, who took silver behind Eaglestone in the 1m Springboard, was closest challenger again, scoring 174.75 for her five dives.

But Eaglestone prevailed on 174.85 to maintain her dominance and close in on a clean sweep of the Group D/E2 titles.

Eaglestone’s 1m Synchro partner Evie Smith won bronze on 169.70.

In the prelims of the Elite Group C events, City of Sheffield’s Raffa Benitez qualified in first for the final of the Boys 1m Springboard.
