Jack Haslam seals British 3m Springboard title in Plymouth

Jack Haslam came through a competitive 3m Springboard final to win gold at the British Diving Championships 2018.

Having progressed to the final in fourth, the City of Sheffield diver raised his to score 438.50 and claim the British 3m title for the first time.

The English diver was joined on the podium by younger brother and defending champion Ross Haslam, who collected silver on 419.90. Scotland’s James Heatly took bronze on 408.55.

While Jack Haslam was yet to land 3m gold at a British Champs, he landed the 3m crown at the 2017 National Cup, also in Plymouth at the start of last season.

But while the 22-year-old had impressed with his 420.55 to win on the South Coast 12 months ago, he took his form to a new level this time round.

Haslam peaked in the third round, scoring 89.25 for his reverse 3 ½ somersaults with tuck (307C) while he finished with 76.50 for his forward 2 ½ somersaults 2 twists piked (5154B).

Ross Haslam returns to podium

The prospect of brothers representing Team England for diving at April’s Commonwealth Games is now firmly on the horizon after Ross Haslam’s performance for silver.

While the 20-year fell shy of his 438.75 to win the title in 2017, he put in a consistent performance.

The Sheffield diver scored in the 60s and 70s for his first five dives, before finishing with a classy 81.60 for his forward 2 ½ somersaults 2 twists piked (5154B).

The result brought the younger Haslam brother his third silver in two days, having also finished second in the 1m Springboard and 3m Synchro – alongside Jack – on the opening day in Plymouth.

If the Haslam brothers did make the Gold Coast 2018 team, they would emulate swimmers Max and Joe Litchfield – also from City of Sheffield – in being selected alongside their sibling to compete for England at this year’s Games.
