Matty Lee wins double gold at Puerto Rico Grand Prix

Matty Lee starred with double gold at the third leg of the 2017 FINA Diving Grand Prix Series in Puerto Rico.

The 19-year old teamed up with Dive London’s Robyn Birch on the opening day in San Juan, winning the Mixed 10m Synchro event.

He added a second title in the individual 10m Platform while City of Sheffield’s Freddie Woodward and Scotland’s James Heatly also won gold in the 3m Synchro.

Lee improves on National Cup showing

Lee has shown glimpses of his form already this season, landing 10m silver at the National Cup in February despite two dropped dives in the final.

But he looked much sharper as he claimed his maiden Grand Prix title, scoring 492.95 and leading through five of the six rounds of the final.

The victory was no penalty kick for the City of Leeds diver, with China’s Xu Zewei (484.85) within touching distance throughout.

The Mixed 10m Synchro was a simpler task for Lee and Birch, as they scored 281.76 to defeat their only opponents, Jonathan Chan and Freida Lim of Singapore (254.52).

Woodward and Heatly took on six other nations in the 3m Synchro, scoring 372.72 to win by more than 10 points.
