Pele scores first national title on 1m Springboard

Pele Julien landed the biggest gold of his career with one of the most dominant performances at the 2015 ASA National Age Group Diving Championships.

The 13-year old Crystal Palace diver, competing in the Group B age group for the first time, had more than 30 points in hand on the field as he romped to victory on the 1m Springboard.

The highlight of his round was a 62.00 for his penultimate inward 2 ½ somersaults with tuck as Julien racked up 295.05 for the victory.

“I feel really chuffed with that,” said Julien. “It’s all down to the hard work with my coach – I wouldn’t have got here without him.

“It’s a little bit harder in Group B. You’ve got people who are older than you, have harder dives and better rip. So there’s a little more pressure but you just have to go out there and do your best.”

Southampton Diving Academy’s Rhys Crookes saved his best dive for last to grab silver on 264.20 while Beaumont’s Liam Morrell-Phillips, winner of the Platform competition, claimed bronze on 257.65.

Albatross diver James West wins 3m Springboard gold

Albatross diver James West claimed the other gold on offer in the morning session on day four, scoring 189.65 for victory in the Group D/E2 3m Springboard.

Dive London’s Maxwell Spencer scored 169.40 for silver while City of Sheffield’s Ethan Chapman claimed bronze on 163.20, narrowly holding off the attention of Crystal Palace diver Callum King (162.20).

In the Elite Group C prelims, Southend’s Tyler Humphreys led the way in the Boys Platform on 301.45. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace’s Louise Bradley closed in on her second gold in as many days, winning the Girls 1m Prelim on 277.40.
