Stage set for diving at Glasgow 2018 Euros

The European Championships will be taking place in Glasgow from the 2-12 August 2018, taking on a multi-sport format for the first time.

The diving events are scheduled to take place at Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh. This is the same venue as the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Britain has had some very successful European campaigns in recent years. At the London 2016 European Aquatics Championships, Team GB divers took 11 medals from thirteen events. Tom Daley and Grace Reid made history when they won the Mixed 3m Synchronised Springboard competition.

Jack Laugher and Chris Mears also secured a gold medal for Team GB. The pair finished a full 10 points ahead of their Russian counterparts. This was the first defeat for Russia in over a decade.

The new multi-sport format

The new multi-sport format will take place every four years from 2018. The current biennial European Aquatics Championships will still take place in between quadrennial cycles.

The new event consists of seven sports; Aquatics, Cycling, Golf, Gymnastics, Rowing and Triathlon. Aquatics is split into a further four disciplines; swimming, diving, open water and synchronised swimming.

ASA England Programmes Diving lead, Connie Ford, said: “The European Championships changing to a multi-sport format for each quadrennial cycle will be hugely beneficial for our divers. It will provide many of the younger athletes with inspiration, as they watch their role models competing for international glory.

“In the long term, many of these young athletes could end up using the European Championships as a stepping stone to bigger events like the Olympics. Multi-sport events are such a different experience to competing in a single sport competition. It can really help less experienced athletes to grow and develop.

“Although most of the England Programmes divers will not be ready to head to Glasgow in 2018, many will have their sights set competing in the 2022 Championships.”
