Learn To Swim

Get Involved

The most important reason to learn to swim is that swimming is the only sport which can save your or your child’s life.

Sadly, drowning is the third most common form of accidental death in children, so learning to swim really is an essential life skill.

But one of the best things about swimming is that people of any age, size or ability can take part – and it is more accessible to those with disabilities than most other sports.

Child swimming lessons in the East Midlands

Swimming and water safety has been a statutory element of the national curriculum for physical education since 1994.

While your child will receive swimming lessons at school, there are plenty of swim schools in the East Midlands who offer swimming lessons for children of all ages.

Swim Schools affiliated with Swim England will deliver swimming lessons based on the Learn To Swim Programme.

The all-inclusive programme takes non-swimmers on a journey through four specialised Frameworks.

These start with the basics of learning to swim and end with advanced skills for sports such as water polo or diving. There is also a Framework for teaching adults to swim.

The Swim England Learn to Swim Programme

  1. Pre-School Framework – aimed at babies and toddlers aged between 0-5 years old. It helps to build the foundation for a lifelong love of water.
  2. Learn to Swim Framework – made up of the seven stages of learning to swim, which develop confident and able swimmers using fun and enjoyment to engage learners.
  3. Aquatic Skills Framework – made up of three advanced stages, from eight to ten. These build sport specific skills for the other aquatic disciplines: water polo, diving and synchronised swimming.

Adults, it is never too late to learn to swim

Research shows that up to nine million adults in England are unable to swim. But no matter how old you are it is never too late to learn.

The fourth part of the Swim England Learn To Swim Programme is designed specifically for adult learners.

  1. Adult Swimming Framework – suitable for older teenagers and adults of all ages and aims to improve confidence and technique, whatever their swimming ability.

In the East Midlands there are more than 600 venues which teach the Adult Swimming Framework.

Use the Swim England PoolFinder to search for your local pool and ask them about Adult Learn To Swim lessons.
