19th March 2013

Sixteen-year-old Wayne Instrell has been recognised as ‘a genuine inspiration’ for his commitment to learning to swim.

Awarded the Sky Sports Living for Sport Student of the Year on Friday, Bedford Academy student Wayne was badly bullied at school and just when his confidence was returning he tragically lost his father.

Did you know swimming is part of the National Curriculum? Head to our Parents section to find out more about school swimming.Despite being unable to swim and admitting to being initially terrified of the water, he signed up for his school’s Sky Sports Living for Sport swimming project.

He found swimming very difficult but tackled the challenge head on and successfully overcame his fears to become a stronger, more confident person who now aspires to become a PE teacher.
