In British Swimming you will find information about the world of high performance sport, including the disciplines of Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo and Para-Swimming.

The ASA is the governing body for the sport in England. In this section you will find all you need to know about joining a club or competing in England and becoming a swimming teacher or coach.

The IoS delivers the ASA’s courses and is a member organisation. Whether you are a teacher, coach, employer or club you will find everything you need to know about qualifications or educating your workforce.

Level 3 Certificate in Achieving excellence in Sports performance

This qualification recognises excellence in a specific sport.  The certificate is made up of eight sport specific units: To gain the certificate all eight mandatory units must be achieved.  This is delivered by the England Talent Team. This qualification is awarded by Edexcel. The certificate will be delivered at training, competitions, AASE Workshops/Camps and Online. 

The qualification is all about being an elite athlete and it is broken into eight units that cover important factors of an elite athlete’s life.

  1. Plan, apply and evaluate your technical skills to achieve excellence in sport
  2. Plan, apply and evaluate your tactical skills to achieve excellence in sport
  3. Plan, apply and evaluate your physical capability to achieve excellence in sport
  4. Plan, apply and evaluate your nutritional programme to achieve excellence in sport
  5. Plan, apply and evaluate the mental skills and attitudes needed to achieve excellence in sport
  6. Plan and manage your lifestyle to achieve excellence in your sport
  7. Plan and manage your sporting career
  8. Communicate and work effectively with other people to achieve excellence in your sport
  9. Maintain health and safety at training and competition venues.

Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Sports Performance

This certificate is designed to show your knowledge and understanding of Sports Performance. It is made up of nine units which are:

  1. Understand technical skills to achieve excellence in sport
  2. Understand tactical skills to achieve excellence in sport
  3. Understand physical capability to achieve excellence in sport
  4. Understand nutritional programme to achieve excellence in sport
  5. Understand mental skills and attitudes needed to achieve excellence in sport
  6. Understand lifestyle to achieve excellence in your sport
  7. Understand how to manage your sporting career
  8. Understand communication and teamwork effectively  to achieve excellence in your sport
  9. Understand health and safety at training and competition venues.

Employment, Rights and Responsibilities

This is a supporting qualification which will help develop your understanding of:

  • Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (i.e the law and key procedures at work)
  • The active, Leisure and Learning Sector (i.e employment and career opportunities)
  • An Employing Organisation (i.e organisational structures and professional development)

Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Personal, Learning and Thinking skills (PLTS) provide a framework for describing the qualities and skills needed for success in learning and life:

  • Independent Enquiry
  • Reflective Learning
  • Team Working
  • Creative Thinking
  • Self Management
  • Effective Participation

Functional Skills at Level 2

Application of Number Level 2 and Communication Level 2.  Athletes will do these at school or college built into their normal academic timetable. Athletes who have achieved Grade C or above in GCSE English and Maths will be exempt from this component.

The overall apprenticeship will be awarded by Skills Active after all three components have been completed.
