FIRST INTERACTIONS ON AMBITIOUS NEW COACHING PROGRAMME

02 Oct 2009

The initial intake of successful candidates for the ‘Advanced Coaching Offer’, the ASA’s new personalised support package for aspirational coaches, have taken the first steps on the programme to develop and expand their coaching skills.

The 80 places on the programme, offered at absolutely no cost to the coach or club, were heavily oversubscribed with over 200 applications received. Potential candidates were short listed and interviewed for a chance to shape their future in aquatic coaching with a structured process of observation/analyses of coaching sessions, one to one discussions, coaching at regional ASA Beacon centres and attendance at ASA talent camps.

James Stannard, Head Coach at Borough of Stockton Swim Scheme in the North East is excited about joining this elite group of proactive, talented, developing coaches across England.

“I am looking forward to the first meeting of all the coaches in the region where the ASA experts will assess my strengths and identify what areas I need to improve upon.  From then on I will be able to access the necessary support to help me become a better coach which will help my squad in turn become better swimmers.

“This initiative is exactly what I need to help both my career progression and my personal development.  I plan to pass my expanded knowledge onto my swimmers to increase their medal chances in Nationals, Europeans and beyond.”

Blackburn Centurions SC Head Coach and Gallica SC Assistant Coach Rick Hall feels that the opportunity to work with more experienced coaches will be one of the highlights of the scheme.

“I applied to be on this programme because I want to progress in my coaching and make the most of all the opportunities available.  This is a brilliant way to network and be mentored by senior coaches – I have been coaching for a couple of years so feel I will particularly benefit from this.  I am also very much looking forward to getting involved with the Beacon programme and learning how the talent development team work.”

Colin Huffen, ASA National Education Officer and Coaching Systems Team Manager said, “We are delighted to welcome the first intake of coaches onto the Advanced Coaching Offer.  It’s great that we have so many developing coaches who are eager to commit to this four year programme to expand their skills and push their careers forward.”
