Water Babies and IoS sign Skills Pledge

Baby swimming specialists Water Babies and the Institute of Swimming (IoS) have signed a Skills Pledge to provide premium education and training in baby and pre-school swimming, developing the only ASA externally accredited programme for under-four-year olds.

The partnership will provide a seamless swimmer pathway, linking the Water Babies baby and toddler programmes into the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim framework. This will ensure quality assured swimming instruction from birth, with a clear development pathway.

A key concern was that when children ‘graduate’ from Water Babies at the age of four, they need to continue swimming and developing their skills.

As part of the Pledge, all new and existing Water Babies tutors will be trained in line with the ASA structure via the IoS. These tutors will then be qualified to deliver the Water Babies Adult & Child accredited Diploma to all Water Babies instructors nationwide.

Steve Franks, Managing Director at Water Babies said: “More than 24,000 babies learn to swim with us each week and we wanted to ensure that we are offering the best possible service with a clear development structure. Partnering with the ASA is further endorsement of our world-class teaching and our commitment to providing the highest quality swimming lessons.

“A key concern for us was that, at the age of four, when children ‘graduate’ from Water Babies, they need to continue swimming and developing their skills. This partnership will give the young swimmers the benefit of clear pathways into other swimming disciplines and the option of linking with the ASA accredited partners when the time is right.”

IoS is one of the largest training providers in the sport and active leisure industry. Emma Phipps, Assistant Head of Operations at the IoS, said: “Through our partnership, Water Babies instructors will benefit from being supported in their complete career development pathway by the IoS.

"The Water Babies Adult & Child Diploma will allow instructors to then hone their skills by attending a range of our continual professional development seminars.”

In addition, the IoS is providing ongoing leadership and management training for Water Babies head office staff.

The signing of the Skills Pledge marks the beginning of a partnership between Water Babies, ASA and IoS that is to change the landscape of baby and pre-school swimming.
