Teachers and coaches confirm IoS provides peace of mind

Teachers and coaches have backed Institute of Swimming (IoS) membership, which provides teachers and coaches with a package of valuable benefits, including the peace of mind which comes with a comprehensive insurance package.

Fellow of the Institute, teacher, coach and tutor Derek White said, “My first priority is the insurance cover, which I consider to be excellent. Membership makes me feel part of a swimming family and the ability to use designatory letters after your name gives credibility – people and organisations I deal with have trust in me because of my membership.”

Malcolm Acreman joined the IoS as soon as he qualified: “The insurance provided is a safeguard and whilst I am insured by my employers I like the added security of the cover provided by the membership. I value my IoS membership as it is a mark of my status within Swimming.”

Unlike other swimming membership schemes, the IoS provides personal accident, corporate and loss of income cover as well as civil (public) liability of £20 million.

This high level of cover means that if the worst were to happen and a teacher or coach suffered loss of income due to a pool being temporarily closed due to a fire, for example, then a set amount up to £100 per week could be claimed*.

Similarly, a weekly amount would be payable through the personal accident cover, if for example a member was unable to work due to an accident at the pool during a session.*

Georgia Ulyett was strongly recommended by her tutor to join the Institute. She said, “Even if you are covered by your employer, all swimming instructors should have their own insurance as well. I am also self-employed for some work so it’s peace of mind.”

She added, “I feel it’s well worth the fee also for the peace of mind that I have access to professional advice and representation should there ever be an incident involving injury in one of my classes. I have used the professional advice service several times to solve pay disputes whilst in employment and have always been successful. ”

Jackie Shields, Membership Manager at the IoS said, “Comprehensive insurance cover is just one of the benefits of being a member. As well as subscription to Swimming Times and discounted rates for courses and conferences, we also provide free access to professional advice on employment matters. And as Georgia has mentioned, if you have suffered an accident at work or have any kind of legal, technical or employment issue, it really is invaluable support. Teachers and coaches really cannot afford not to join up!”

Membership of the Institute also brings the reassurance of being part of a long established, trusted organisation, committed to the continuing development of its members through one of the UK’s most comprehensive in-service training scheme for swimming teachers and coaches. Members receive discounted rates on a wide range of continuing professional development seminars covering the latest industry developments.
