Everyone has to start somewhere, even top athletes. So swimming.org asked top GB swimmers for their memories of taking to the water. Here Lizzie Simmonds shares her earliest memories and more.

Lizzie Simmonds

My first memory

"I was really young when I first got into the water. I can't remember the age. My parents would put me in the pool when I was on holiday. It was the only thing that would stop me crying!  Now I get to travel the world and represent my country, and I am still young."

Did you get badges and certificates as a child?

Yes, I did most of them. I liked the distance ones best as they were a real challenge. They gave me something to aim for."

Learning to swim led to LIzzie breaking British records last year. Click here learn more about her record breaking career so far.

A few more things you may not know about Lizzie

  • What is the highest number of press ups you have done in a single session? "About 20, not very many."
  • How long can you hold your breath under water? "I can hold my breath for around three minutes and can do about 75metres in distance."
