Everyone has to start somewhere, even top athletes. So swimming.org asked top GB swimmers for their memories of taking to the water. Here Rebecca Adlington shares her earliest memories and more.

Rebecca Adlington

Rebecca Adlington My first memory

"My first memory is before I learnt to swim. On holiday my mum was blowing up my armbands and telling me to wait. But I ignored her and jumped straight in! I shouldn't have done it but I couldn't wait to get in the water."

Did you get badges and certificates as a child?

"Yes, I did. But I still haven’t got my diving one though, so officially I can’t dive! I have 15 or 20, but stopped doing them. I don’t think I got my 1000m badge either actually!"

Learning to swim has led to Rebecca breaking European and world records. Click here learn more about her record breaking career so far.

A few more things you may not know about Rebecca

  • OK Rebecca, what don’t we know about you? "I am really scared of the sea and I hate fish. I don’t eat any fish at all. Can’t stand how they look, taste or smell!"
  • Who would play you in a film of your life and why? "Reese Witherspoon, I love her. She is nothing like me but she is amazing. It would have to be a romantic comedy."
  • What is the highest number of press ups you have done in a single session? "One! No joke, I can’t do them."
  • How long can you hold your breath under water? "Ten seconds. I have asthma. Can’t swim 25m under water."
