Aimee Ramm storms to 100m Freestyle gold at Masters Worlds

Aimee Ramm stormed to 100m Freestyle gold on day two of the 2017 FINA Masters Championships in Budapest.

The GB Police swimmer was the only Brit to reach the podium in the 100m Free, touching first in the 35-39 Yrs age group.

Ramm is competing in this age group for the first season, having won European 100m Freestyle bronze in her last year of the 30-34 Yrs bracket in London last year.

She swam stroke for stroke with USA’s Ericka Richards in her heat, turning just 0.09 ahead of the American, who was in the adjacent lane.

And there remained just 0.09 seconds to split the pair at the touch, with Ramm claiming gold in 1:01.37 ahead of Richards’ 1:01.46 for silver.

The result brings Great Britain a sixth gold of the competition after two victories in the 800m Free and another three in the 200m Back.

Three near misses for British women

While Ramm was the only British medallist in the 100m Free, there were three fourth-places and four fifth-places across the age groups.

Guildford City’s Michelle Ware, East Leeds’ Nina Williams and Birmingham Masters’ Judy Wilson finished fourth in the 40-44, 45-49 and 70-74 Yrs age groups respectively.

Basingstoke Bluefins’ Fleur Parker followed Ware home in the 40-44 Yrs age group while there were also fifth place finishes for Ali Phesse (Carn Brea & Helston), Lindsey Gowland (Etwall Eagles) and Alison Gwynn (Mid Sussex Marlins).
