British Masters Swimming Championships returns to Plymouth

Masters News

Hundreds of the best Masters swimmers from across the country are taking part in the British Masters Championships in Plymouth this weekend.

The competition, which runs from Friday 8 June to Sunday 10 June, will see 714 swimmers aged between 18 and 80 take part in 47 individual events.

Hosted by Swim England in partnership with Plymouth City Council and Everyone Active, the British Championships is the highlight of the masters swimming domestic calendar.

Last year’s Championships saw one world record, eight European records and 51 British records set at the Aberdeen Sports Village Aquatics Centre.

This year, competitors will travel from all corners of the UK, as well as Ireland, the Netherlands and Namibia, to contest medals and records across the twelve age groups.

Back to the Ocean City

This is the second time the British Masters Championships is being held in Plymouth.

Deputy council leader Pete Smith said: “It’s great to welcome the British Masters back to Britain’s Ocean City this year.

“With many of the country’s best swimmers heading to the Plymouth Life Centre to compete this promises to be an exciting weekend and we’re sure to see some impressive displays.”

David Greenwood, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said: “We are delighted to once again be hosting this fantastic event at Plymouth Life Centre.

“It is a brilliant showcase of talent from across the country, and proves that swimming can continue to be enjoyed competitively at any age. I wish all the competitors the best of luck, and look forward to an exciting weekend of sport ahead.”
