Brits win hat-trick of 200m Backstroke golds in Budapest

Great Britain’s Masters swimmers added another three golds to their tally at the World Masters Championships in Budapest.

Greg Kahn, Sophie Casson and Jo Corben all topped the podium in the 200m Backstroke while the British contingent added another three silvers and a bronze.

Casson was one of two Brits to win gold on the opening day of pool action in Hungary, setting a European record in the 30-34 Yrs 800m Freestyle.

And the Carnforth Otter quickly doubled her medal tally with victory in the 200m Back, clocking a Championship record 2:20.37.

Silver City’s Rachael Keir repeated her result from the 800m Free to claim silver behind Casson in 2:26.72.

Greg Khan upgrades from European bronze

Competing in the 45-49 Yrs age group, Kahn had won bronze in this event at last year’s European Championships in London.

But the Spencer swimmer was more than three seconds faster than his time in London, as he smashed his own British record with a 2:15.14 effort.

Fareham Nomads swimmer Corben was in a class of her own as she added the World title to her European gold from 12 months ago in the women’s 45-49 Yrs.

Corben clocked 2:25.80 to take the touch with a Championship record, coming home more than five seconds ahead of Costa Rica’s Clauda Poll in second.

Julie Hoyle and Jacqueline Grace reached the podium in the 55-59 Yrs age group as they won silver and bronze respectively.

East Leeds’ Hoyle touched in 2:50.03 while Kenilworth Masters’ Grace stopped the clock on 2:52.32.

Etwall Eagles’ Kath Tunnicliffe was the only other British medallist for the 200m Back, winning silver in the 65-69 Yrs age group.

Tunnicliffe, who scooped the 50m, 100m and 200m Back hat-trick at this year’s British Champs, lowered her British record to 3:15.95 to clinch her first medal of the meet.
