Matthew Lue sprints to World Championship gold

Matthew Lue landed 50m Freestyle gold on day four of the Masters World Championships in Budapest.

Lue, who competes for Out To Swim, took the title by the narrowest of margins, finishing 0.01 seconds ahead of Russia’s Aleksei Manzhula in the 35-39 Yrs age group.

The British swimmer is competing in this age group for the first season, having placed fifth in the 30-34 Yrs 50m Free at last year’s European Championships in London.

And after claiming the British title in Aberdeen earlier this year, Lue added the World crown with a 23.91 effort in Hungary.

Lue’s victory saw him become the only British swimmer to reach the podium in the shortest sprint freestyle event.

However, there were another seven top five finishes for Brits in Budapest.

Potters Bar’s Daryl Mason was the only other British man to finish in the top five, placing fifth in the 45-49 Yrs age group in 25.23.

Fleur Parker breaks British record to place fourth

In the women’s events, Fleur Parker and Liz Woolner were closest to the podium places as they finished fourth.

Basingstoke Bluefins swimmer Parker took down the British record in the 40-44 Yrs age group, touching in 28.12 but finishing just 0.31 seconds shy of the medals. Guildford’s Michelle Ware was just one place back in fifth on 28.19.

Team Anglia’s Woolner was also within half a second of the podium as she finished fourth in the 50-54 Yrs age group.

Woolner clocked 29.36 with Russia’s Olga Borisova third fastest in the age group on 28.90.

There were also fifth place finishes for GB Police’s Aimee Ramm, Wycombe’s Phillippa Collin and Birmingham’s Judy Wilson in the 35-39, 55-59 and 70-74 Yrs age groups respectively.
