Mike Hodgson stars with hat-trick of golds in third session

Mike Hodgson broke two European records and won a hat-trick of golds in the third session of the British Masters and Senior Age Group Championships 2017 in Aberdeen.

The Guildford City swimmer joined his teammates to land the 200-239 Years Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay in the opening event of the session.

Hodgson swam the lead for the European record-breaking squad, handing over to Lynda Coggins, Michelle Ware and David Bryant.

The quartet came home in 4:10.71, smashing the old national marker of 4:19.85 set by Gloucester Masters two years ago.

Hodgson close to world record pace in 50m Breast

Hodgson was just 0.22 seconds shy of the world record as he swam to gold in the 50-54 Years age group 50m Breaststroke.

The 50-year old, who won medals across 50, 100m and 200m Breast at last year’s European Championships, clocked 30.70, beating his own British record of 31.14 from March.

He completed his hat-trick in the 200m Individual Medley, within a couple of seconds of his own national record as he touched in 2:24.91.

Hodgson’s relay teammate Bryant also won gold in the 200m IM, claiming the 55-59 Years title in 2:35.59.

Basingstoke Bluefins return to podium with relay gold

While Hodgson was the only individual record breaker of the session, Basingstoke Bluefins set a record in the Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay.

Having clocked a British record in the 4x50m Free Relay earlier in the day, the 160-199 Years quartet of Ollie Espinasse, Spencer Turner, Liz Godfrey and Fleur Parker returned to the water with a blistering performance.

They fell just 0.46 seconds shy of the world record as they finished in 3:56.90, putting paid to the old British marker of 4:01.45 from 2015.
