National Masters Championships finish in style

Day three of the 2014 ASA National Masters Championships (25m) had fewer events than the previous two days; however there was no less intensity in the races and even more British and European records were taken.

The sprints saw some familiar faces reaching the podium, with Sally Shields from Borough of Kirklees breaking yet another British record with her gold medal performance in the Women’s 50m Breaststroke, 60/64 yrs age group (40.42).

Diane Ford from Leicester’s Spencer SC also took her second British record in the same event, swimming 44.05 in the 70/74yrs age group.

In the Men’s 50m Breaststroke event, Ben Harkin of Chesterfield flaunted his superior athleticism once again, touching almost two seconds ahead of silver in the 35/39 age group. This was yet another British Record time (28.84).

David Ebanks of Romford Town SC also broke a British Record in the 50m Breaststroke, swimming 28.94 for his gold medal win in the 30/34yrs age group.

Michael Hodgson of Guildford swam a great time in the 45/49yrs age group (30.48) and Neville Barton of Trafford Met showed how it should be done in the 60/64 age group, touching in 34.60. Both broke British records with their swims.

Records broken in men’s and women’s 200m Freestyle

In the 200m Freestyle events, records were taken by both the men and the women. David Warren of Otters SC was the British record breaker for the men in the 40/44yrs age group, undercutting the previous best time by well over half a second, (1:55.87).

It was Ilkley SC’s Karen Graham who took the British record in the Women’s 45/49yrs age group, literally a fingertip ahead of the previous time of 2:18.36, touching in 2:18.34.

Two British records were broken in the Men’s 100m Backstroke event; the first by Kalon Veale in the 18/24yrs age group, clearing almost a full second (54.67), the other by Lee Peterson in the 40/44yrs age group who won the 100m Breaststroke the previous day, swimming 59.36 for the gold.

Julie Hoyle breaks European record in 100m Back

The women’s 100m Backstroke events had four British and one European record toppled. Julie Hoyle of East Leeds SC took the European record with her 1:12.05 in the 50/54yrs age group. The British records went to Joanna Corben of Fareham Nomads in the 40/44yrs (1:07.75), Nicola Harris of Corsham SC in the 45/49yrs age group (1:10.46) and Eileen Luther of Rochford SC in the 55/59yrs age group (1:18.47).
