Otter swim away with top club trophy at British Masters

Otter closed the British Masters Championships 2018 in style on day three in Plymouth.

The London-based club scored a total of 314 FINA points to win the Cupar Trophy Top Club Award. London rivals, Spencer Swim Team was second with 274, and Out to Swim was third with 160 points.

In total 56 records were broken during the three day event, including two World records, seven European and 47 British records.

Otter and Preston dominate the relay records

In the relay events, Otter’s men and women’s 100+ teams both set 4x100m Medley relay British Records. The men posted 4:09.00 while the women clocked 4:54.09. Kenilworth Master’s male quartet also set a British record 4:11.70 in the 160+ Years relay.

In the 4x200m Freestyle, Spencer set a 280+ British record, clocking 12:34.76 for the win.

Preston’s relay success continued with the mixed 4x50m Freestyle 72+ team setting a British record 1:43.41. The women’s 72+ team also lowered the 4x100m Medley relay British mark to 4:44.60, while the men lost out to Totnes who set a British record 4:03.23 in the 72+ Years.

Individual British records fall

Mark Reynolds finished his meet with a British record 2:09.90 in the 55-59 Years 200m Freestyle. The Barnet Copthall swimmer heads home with three British and one European record.

Donald Leatherbarrow also added two more 80-84 Years British records to his collection. The Gloucester Masters athlete posted 3:14.78 in the 200m Freestyle and 1:51.23 in the 100m Butterfly.

After lowering the 400m Freestyle British mark on day two, Joan Edwards repeated the achievement in the 200m. The Gateshead and Wickham swimmer posted 2:33.99 to set a new 60-64 Years British record.

In the 1500m Freestyle, Peter Dixon (Tower Hamlets) lowered the 50-54 Years British record with a 17:55.59 swim, while Robert Barker (Kingston Royals) posted a British record 18:39.24 in the 55-59 Years.

World-wide competition

During the three days of competition at the Plymouth Life Centre, 715 athletes from 202 clubs took part. As well as the UK, athletes represented Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Turkey and Australia.

The youngest competitor was 18-year-old Rose Stride from Crawley SC while the oldest competitor was 92-year-old Sam Almond from Eastbourne.
