More records tumble on day two of Masters Champs

Day two of the 2014 British Gas ASA National Masters and Senior Age Group Championships (25m) at Ponds Forge in Sheffield was filled with record-breaking swims, many of which were from the team races.

In the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle relays, Camp Hill SC’s 200+ swim team took a World record by exactly a second, swimming 4:23.64 to get a gold medal. Otters SC also won gold in the event, smashing both the British and European records in the 120+ age group.

GB Police Aquatic Team swam a solid Medley Relay in the 100+ age group, touching in 1:53.85 to take a British medal for their squad.

In the 4x200m Freestyle relays, two European and Three British records were swam across three age groups. Colne ASC’s Sub 160 Masters squad took on the 160+ age group, taking both the British and European record with an impressive time of 9:12.35, more than 20 seconds faster than the previous European record.

City of Oxford SC took a British record in the 160+ age group, this time in the Men’s 4x200m relay. They beat the previous record by over two seconds, swimming 8:24.82 for the gold.

The final records were taken by Teddington SC in the 240+ age group for the 4x200m relay, swimming a great time of 9:47.75 to set the new British and European times for the event.

Judy Wilson sets two world records for double gold

In the individual events, Birmingham Masters’ Judy Wilson – who claimed five individual golds at this summer’s World Masters Championships in Montreal –  impressed to win double gold with world records over 50m and 100m Butterfly in the 70/74 age group, clocking 1:25.27 over four lengths then 37.23 over half the distance later in the day.

Helen Gorman of Long Eaton SC, who had set a European record in the 200m Breaststroke on Day One, took yet another British and European record in the 100m Breaststroke event. She swam an impressive 1:12.51 for her gold medal.

Yesterday’s was the best swim I’ve had as a Masters swimmer, so I’m really pleased.

Gorman commented on her performances, “I came here to get three European records, I’m not sure about the one tomorrow, but I’m absolutely over the moon with those times, better than I had hoped for.

“Yesterday’s was the best swim I’ve had as a Masters swimmer, so I’m really pleased. It’s such a great pool, you come here and you’ve got the best Masters swimmers in the country; it brings out the best in everyone I think.”

Helen Gorman continues winning streak into 400m IM

Gorman continued her winning streak, breaking the British Record for the Women’s 400m Individual Medley with a great time of 5:18.97.

Sally Shields of Borough of Kirklees took a British Record in the 60/64yrs age group for the Women’s 100m Breaststroke (1:28.97) and Diane Ford of Spencer SC took the British and European records by a full second in the 70-74 age group (1:34.86).

The Men’s 100m Breaststroke also saw the toppling of three British Records, the first by Lawrence Palmer of Putteridge SC in the 18-24 seniors age group (1:01.39), the second by Lee Peterson of Braintree SC in the 40/44yrs age group (1:05.50) and the final by Geoffrey Thwaites from City of Cambridge SC in the 65/69yrs age group (1:23.75).

Records broken in men’s 50m Freestyle

There were also some records taken in the Men’s 50m Freestyle. Paul Clements of East Leeds SC beat his rivals to the gold, taking both the British and European record with a time of 23.51 in the 40/44yrs age group.

East Leeds SC seemed on a roll in this event, with David Emerson also taking a British record in the 50/54yrs age group for his time of 25.13. Finally, in the 60/64yrs age group, Steven Wall from City of Liverpool SC took the last record of the event, swimming 27.35 for the British record and a gold medal.

Other notable record breakers were Keith Godbehere of Rotherham Metro SC who swam 7:20.76 for the British record in the Men’s 400 Freestyle 80/84yrs age group, David Warren of Otters SC who also took a British record for his time of 4:09.65 in the 40/44yrs age group in the Men’s 400m Freestyle and Romford Town who took swam 4:29.58 in the Mixed 400m Medley Team relay in the 160+ age group, again for a British medal.
