Three generations of Masters at the East Region Masters

It is not often that three generations of the same family swim in the same Masters meet, let alone for the same team.

But it happened at this year’s East Region Masters Championships at Newmarket on 1 October 2017.

The Masters family, aptly named, of Janet aged 77, son Peter aged 55, and grandson Matt aged 22, all swam for the South Beds Masters Swimming Club.

Between them they won 16 medals, including eight individual golds and another six medals in relay events.

About the Masterses

Janet started swimming for Watford Swimming Club in the 1950s, represented Hertfordshire in County events and swam in the National Champs in 1955 and 1956.

In Janet’s Masters career, she has swum in World and European Masters Championships, winning medals in the Worlds at Gothenburg, Kazan, Budapest, and in the Europeans in London.

Peter started his swimming career for Leighton Buzzard SC, reaching the National Age Group Championships on three occasions from 1977 to 1979.

Peter swam in the European Masters in the early 90s, before going on to play water polo for Milton Keynes later in life and turning back to Masters swimming with South Beds.

Matthew started swimming with Linslade Crusaders, before moving to the City of Milton Keynes, where he swam at the National Age Groups and Senior Championships, before going to University at Birmingham where he swam, and played water polo.

Matthew also plays water polo for City of Milton Keynes.

A Masters quartet in Sheffield

The threesome from South Beds are off to Sheffield to swim in the Nationals for South Beds, where they will be joined by yet another from the Masters family, Peter’s daughter (Matthew’s sister, Janet’s granddaughter) Elizabeth.

Like her brother she started swimming with Linslade Crusaders, before moving on to Milton Keynes and swam at National Age Group Level. Elizabeth will also will be swimming in Sheffield for Birmingham Masters.

Who knows? One day all three generations may swim in the same ‘Masters’ family relay team!
