Whether you’ve embraced the liberating feeling of outdoor swimming or whether you’re a pool traditionalist through and through, there’s no denying open water is here to stay.

From its humble beginnings just three years ago, the British Gas Great North Swim – has more than 10,000 registered swimmers for this year’s event – a first for an open water swimming event in Britain.

You may have read about it or seen athletes swimming open water in triathlons or at the Olympic Games - so maybe it's time you got involved?

There’s no age limit to open water swimming – as long as you’re a competent swimmer, the transition from pool to open water is fairly simple.

Take a look at our brand new Open Water section on British Gas Swimfit now to find out more.

We’ve got more details on the nitty gritty of open water swimming as well as advice such as how to get involved and some handy tips for preparing in the pool.
