Free Swimming boost for Scottish primary schools
3 September, 2010
Scottish primary school pupils are set to benefit from free swimming lessons after an £800,000 investment from the Scottish Government.
We want to make sure Scotland's children are given the opportunity to learn to swim and enjoy swimming as a lifelong activity
The money will be divided among local authorities who will work with sportscotland and Scottish Swimming to implement the plan.
Scottish Minsister for Sport Shona Robison admitted giving all Scottish children the opportunity to learn to swim before they left primary school was the ultimate goal.
“The Scottish Government has always wanted to make sure Scotland’s children have the chance to learn to swim and enjoy it as a lifelong activity,” said Robison.
“By giving local authorities the flexibility to create opportunities to try new approaches and improve on their current provision, this announcement will continue the process of ensuring that this happens.”
The announcement comes less than three months after the Government scrapped the popular free swimming scheme for under-16s and over-60s in England as part of cost-saving measures.
But while Government investment for free swimming in England dried up on 31 July, 49 local authorities have opted to continue funding the scheme themselves.
