Miracle baby Rosanna swims for British Heart Foundation
19 June 2012
Two-year old swimmer and heart patient Rosanna Ogden, who was able to swim before she could walk, is set to take on another challenge in aid of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) this weekend.
The face of the BHF's Little Hearts Campaign, Rosanna was born with an extremely rare and serious heart tumour and within the first couple of weeks of her life she required an operation lasting several hours. Thanks to the skills of heart surgeons she survived and her parents were encouraged to take her swimming to involve her in cardiovascular exercise.
Very soon she was swimming twice a day unaided, and she has become quite a little mermaid. She took up swimming with baby-swimming course specialists Water Babies at the age of 10 weeks old and quickly improved so much that she could swim before she could walk. She entered her first public swim in March this year to raise funds for the BHF. She swam 100 metres unaided - quite a feat at her age, aside from her difficult start in life.
The Ogden family, from Chorley Lancashire, travelled down to Camberley especially for Rosanna’s swimming debut. Now they are preparing to take Farnham by storm when she swims at the local BHF fundraising branch annual event at Farnham Sports Centre on Saturday 23 June.
James Hardwick, the local swim organiser, said: “The Farnham swim is an annual event with many regulars returning year after year. We are delighted to welcome Rosanna and her family as well as the other new swimmers that are signed up for this year’s swim. I hope that others will take the plunge and join in on 23 June.”
Sanam Ogden said, “The BHF urgently needs vital funds to continue its ground-breaking research into every form of heart disease affecting men, women, babies and children. Heart and circulatory disease is the UK’s biggest killer, so even if swimming’s not your thing, please make a donation, however small, to help us change lives.”
Rosanna has set a target sum of £2000 for her swims. You can donate here: http://www.justgiving.com/RosannaOgden or register for the swim by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
