Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre officially opens
4th January 2010
The Nottinghamshire swimming pool where double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington learned to swim was officially re-opened on Saturday 2nd January as The Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre.
The former Sherwood Baths closed in March to undergo a £5 million revamp which included its coal heaters being replaced with a green ground source heat pump and the main pool being extended.
Mansfield district councillor Eddie Smith said: "The pool has been extended, the gym facilities are second to none, there is a state of the art endless training pool and the decor is absolutely stunning.
"It is also the first facility in our area with the introduction of a ground source heat pump and biomass boiler, which will save more than 520 tonnes of CO2 per year."
Adlington, who won gold in the 400m and 800m freestyle events in Beijing, learned to swim at the pool at the age of six before being spotted by talent scouts and was moved to the Nova Mansfield Development Squad
