Roger Allsopp makes history in 17 hours and 51 minutes.
31 August 2011
Retired breast surgeon Roger Allsopp swam his way into the record books on 30th August 2011 as he became the oldest man to swim the English Channel.
It proves you can live younger if you keep active in mind and body. I've never been one to sit on my laurels.
At 70 years and four months, Allsopp completed the 21-mile challenge in 17 hours and 51 minutes, beating the previous Guinness World Record holder George Brunstad who swam the Channel at 70 years and four days in 2004.
“I do feel an immense sense of achievement and relief that I have been successful,” said the granddad of three, who also completed the swim in 2006.
“This has been an incredible personal challenge for me and my focus has always been to help raise money for Hope for Guernsey and Wessex Medical Research, a cause that I am extremely passionate about.
“Coupled with the fact that a man of my ‘grand’ age can achieve such a physical and mental challenge proves that you can live younger if you keep active in mind and body. I’ve never been one to sit on my laurels."
Allsopp is being supported by Nutritional and wellbeing supplement company Healthspan who are aiming to raise £100,000 for the cause.

Impressed by Roger's achievement?
Well you can replicate his challenge in the comfort of your own pool thanks to the MySwimfit Challenges on British Gas Swimfit.
Take as many swims as you like to complete the challenge and track your progress on a Google Map.
And if the 21-mile English Channel seems a bit short for you, why not crank up the distance and take on the length of the River Thames at 215 miles?

EvanImpressive! What an accomplishment! It is always inspiring to read stories like this. How long did Roger train for? I’m sure he spent a lot of time in many pools training for the English Channel swim. I’m not sure that my body could handle swimming 215 miles.
