26th March 2012

British diver and London 2012 hopeful Tom Daley has given the new Plymouth Life Centre his seal of approval.

The Centre opened its doors to the general public on 24th March and Daley, who won two medals at the World Series in Beijing last weekend, will soon return to use the world class diving pool and ‘dry dive’ area.

“Plymouth Life Centre is a fantastic venue and the Olympic pool and diving pool are both excellent,” said Daley.

“I’m honoured to be able to use these facilities for my training and London 2012 preparation but I’m just as pleased to see such superb facilities made available to swimmers and divers of all abilities.

“I feel really fortunate to have this great new venue here in Plymouth, the Centre will be an important legacy of London 2012."

The Plymouth Life Centre, which is managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Plymouth City Council, is also the home training ground of World Cup bronze medallist Tonia Couch.

Couch said, “This is a great opportunity to develop diving and lots of other sports in Plymouth.”

The Centre is also an official pre-Olympic Games training camp for elite athletes from Canada and Lithuania, with many other countries showing an interest.

However, the Centre’s main purpose is to provide affordable community sports activities to the people of Plymouth.

Partnering with National Governing Bodies, Everyone Active will be able to offer professional sports coaching in Swimming, Diving, Netball, Climbing, Badminton, Squash and Racketball, Table Tennis and Bowls.

This means that players of all abilities can enjoy using the state-of-the-art facilities and receive top class sporting expertise at a low cost.

The £46.5 million Centre houses world class aquatic facilities including a 10 lane, 50m competition swimming pool and diving pool with diving boards at 3m, 5m, 7.5m and 10m, video playback facility and bubble release technology for reducing diver impact.

The main pool can be split to make three 25m pools for maximum flexibility, offering a wide range of activities from traditional swimming sessions to water polo and synchronised swimming. There is also a family leisure pool with flumes, beach entry and bubble pool.

A standard swim in the Olympic sized pool will cost just £3.80 with concessions available. For more information visit everyoneactive.com/plc or call 0845 371 3614.
