Are you one of those parents who sit on the poolside watching everyone else have all the fun? Why not get involved yourself and join in with one of the nation’s favourite pastimes.  Whether you are looking for a way to get fit, make new friends or even a way to earn more money whilst the kids are in school, getting involved in swimming could be the answer.

If you're not into swimming lengths of the pool and need a little more inspiration from the poolside, why not try your hand at Aquafit? It's a fun way to get fit and is a popular activity for people of all ages and abilities because virtually anybody can take part with sessions suitable for all needs, even people who can’t swim.

Don't worry if you can't swim, it's never too late to learn - many pools run learn to swim sessions for adults.  And if you're a nervous swimmer, your local pool may also run improver sessions that can help your confidence levels.  Visit here for more advice.

Swimming is a fantastic activity for getting fit and maintaining your health. It's also a great way to burn calories and help with weight loss programmes -  did you know that even a gentle swim can burn over 200 Kcal in half an hour and a fast front crawl can burn as many calories as an 8mph run?  For special programmes designed to meet your specific health and fitness need, check out British Gas Swimfit, the gym-style fitness programme for the pool.

And if you watch your children's lessons and would love to be able to help out, it's a great way to earn a part-time income and could even develop into a full time career. Swimming teaching is an active and challenging role and many local pools are always on the look out for new staff.

Find out even more ways to get involved in swimming, including volunteering, joining a club and attending competitions.
