Getting your child swimming
So that’s it. You’ve taken the plunge (some pun intended!) and decided your child needs to learn to swim. After all, swimming is the only sport that might safe their life.
But how do you know that your child is being taught in the right way and in a way that means they will enjoy their time in the pool? After all, nobody wants a child that is too scared or bored to get into the water.
Well our advice is simple. If you want your son or daughter to have structured swimming lessons follow the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Programme.
Or if you are just looking to have some fun with your child why not try some of our games for the pool.
ASA Learn to Swim Framework
As the experts in all things swimming, the ASA developed the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Programme as a syllabus for swimming lessons.
Lessons delivered using the ASA Learn to Swim Framework use fun and games to take children from the first splash to full competence in the pool and will ultimately help your child develop confidence in the water.
The British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Programme guides your child through ten clearly defined stages, and there's a foundation level to get babies as young as six-months-old started. All of the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Programme is supported by the Kellogg's ASA Awards scheme... that's the badges and certificates you probably remember getting as a youngster.
We recommend children complete Stages 1 to 7 as these are the "core" parts of the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Programme and are designed primarily for five to nine-year-olds.

Finding a pool
Make sure you choose a centre in your area following the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Programme syllabus. Click here to find your nearest centre and ask them what syllabus they follow before enrolling your child into lessons. Also look to see if your local pool has swim21 accreditation, the ASA's 'quality mark'.
Swim21 accreditation means the centre is delivering its Learn to Swim lessons using the Programme AND that these lessons have been assessed for quality, proving they are creating the best possible swimming experience for all and raising the quality of swimming provision across all areas.
The British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Programme is one of the most successful sports programmes of its kind. The syllabus is being implemented in over 1,000 swimming programmes nationwide.
