The National Plan for Teaching Swimming
The 2007 National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS), powered by British Gas, is the syllabus designed by the ASA to help children develop confidence in the water. It uses fun and games to help children develop a ‘jigsaw’ of skills to become competent swimmers.
With an emphasis firmly on the FUNdamentals of swimming, the NPTS also has a serious side. It is underpinned by the principles of Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) ; the perfect foundation for any little Olympic hopeful.
Designed primarily for five to nine-year-olds, the NPTS-based programme guides learners through ten clearly defined stages that lead to the development of all aquatic disciplines, including swimming strokes for competitive swimming and other skills such as ball throwing for water polo.
Budding lifeguards can also pick up their Rookie Lifesaving qualification as part of the NPTS programme. This is just one of many reasons why it is one of the most successful sports programmes of its kind. The syllabus is being implemented in over 1,000 swimming programmes nationwide.
Make sure your child receives quality learn to swim lessons by using a centre in your area following the NPTS syllabus. Click here to find your nearest centre.
Also look to see if your local pool has swim21 accreditation for its learn to swim lessons, meaning it is dedicated to creating the best possible swimming experience for all and to raising the quality of swimming provision across all areas.
