British Gas is proud of the partnership it has forged with British Swimming which spans across all six disciplines.
Over the last five years they have been dedicated to keeping swimming and aquatic sports at the heart of our communities, fostering keen swimmers across all disciplines and in the process safeguarding the future of the sport.
Pools 4 Schools
Working together with Total Swimming and the ASA, British Gas Pools 4 Schools™ installs temporary pools for the length of a school term in ‘aquatically deprived’ schools across England.
Pool closures, a lack of facilities, or the costs of transport and leisure centre hire all contribute to the sad fact that one in five children leaves primary school unable to swim. The National Curriculum Key Stage 2 requires all children to be able to swim 25m without floats or armbands.
British Gas are tackling the problem head-on, bringing swimming to where it’s needed most. In this safe environment, experienced teachers provide swimming lessons and activities ranging from mini-polo to aqua-aerobics, even extending their expertise to the community outside of school hours. This helps children to increase their confidence in the water – with some amazing results.

To help increase participation, British Gas are delighted to be bringing back SwimBritain this year. These nationwide relay events are for swimmers of all abilities and form part of an initiative which aims to encourage more people to swim more regularly by 2015.
With events happening up and down the country in August and September, this is set to be the swimming event of 2014. It’s not to be missed.
So what exactly is SwimBritain?
- It’s a swimming relay event for teams of four.
- There are two version of the event: SwimBritain1000 where each team member swims 1000m in four legs of 250m, or SwimBritain500 is half the distance so each person swims 500m in total, in four legs of 125m
- You can raise money for a charity of your choice, such as our partner, Shelter.
- Celebrity swimmers will take part and cheer everyone on at each of the event venues.
- There’s even an on-line training programme and a SwimBritain app.
New this year we have also introduced a simple step up test that enables swimmers to track their progress as they train for the challenge. Sign up for one of the events and take the fitness test at swimbritain.co.uk.
