Alicia Wilson smashes PB to grab European Junior bronze

Alicia Wilson landed Great Britain’s seventh medal of the 2017 European Junior Championships with 200m Individual Medley bronze in Netanya, Israel.

The 17-year old smashed nearly 1.5 seconds off her lifetime best to seal a podium spot in 2:14.60.

The Guildford swimmer was in lane 2 for the final, tying her PB of 2:16.01 to progress fifth fastest from yesterday’s semis.

But Wilson had plenty left in reserve for her last swim of the meet, turning in fifth at 150m before powering home to secure a medal by just 0.03 seconds.

Only Dutch gold medallist Marrit Steenbergen came back faster in the last 50m of freestyle, splitting 31.51 to the English swimmer’s 31.73.

Steenbergen ultimately took the touch in 2:13.69 while Serbia’s Anja Crevar was only 0.47 seconds ahead of Wilson on 2:14.13.

Relays close competition in seventh and fifth

The British team finished their competition with a seventh and fifth in the last two relays.

The women’s 4x200m Freestyle quartet of Jessica Podger, Elizabeth Harris, Phoebe Griffiths and Leah Crisp clocked 8:16.75 for seventh place.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Pyle, Oliver Crosby, Mason Wilby and Scott McLay came home in 3:43.21 for fifth in the 4x100m Medley Relay.
