Applegate breaks S14 100m Fly world record in Sheffield

Jessica-Jane Applegate starred with an S14 100m Butterfly world record on the penultimate night of the British Summer Championships 2017 in Sheffield.

The UEA Norwich swimmer clocked 1:04.46 in the MC final, beating British teammate Bethany Firth’s old marker of 1:04.63 from April’s British Para-Swimming International Meet in Glasgow.

Applegate became the third English swimmer to break a world record at the meet after Ollie Hynd and Tom Hamer broke freestyle records on the opening night at Ponds Forge.

Firth herself followed Applegate home for silver in Sheffield, touching in 1:05.77 while another S14 swimmer, Louise Fiddes, was third in 1:08.16, having set a PB 1:08.06 in the heats.

Jordan Catchpole equals British marker for MC gold

The men’s event also saw a record as Applegate’s UEA Norwich teammate Jordan Catchpole equalled the men’s British S14 100m Fly record.

The 17-year old took his PB down to 1:00.36 to win MC gold.

Bracknell’s Tyler Ionnou also made the podium, clocking a lifetime best 1:01.08 for bronze, while Scotland’s S12 swimmer Stephen Clegg took silver.
