Chloe Golding wins 200m Backstroke title on day four

Chloe Golding of City of Manchester took an unexpected victory in the women’s 200m Backstroke final on day four of the Swim England National Winter Championships.

Though she was not fastest entry for the event, she had already gone under the consideration time for Commonwealth selection in the 100m Backstroke behind Jessica Fullalove on day two.

And Golding impressed again over 200m, being the only English swimmer in the final to break the 2:10 mark.

The 19-year-old touched in a PB 2:09.93 for gold, slicing more than a second off her PB and ducking under the Commonwealth consideration time for this event.

Golding said: “I’m so happy. I knew I could do it and I knew it was just a matter of time before I did.

“I’ve been focusing on my weights and training and it all just came together at the right time.”

Second place went to Fullalove of Bath National Centre with 2:11.70. Chloe Hannam of City of Peterborough finished third with 2:12.95.

Charlotte Evans of Loughborough Uni took the women’s B final, more than a second ahead of the rest of the field. She beat Newcastle’s Phoebe Lenderyou and Plymouth Leander’s Tegan Drew to the touch, finishing with 2:15.19.

Peters completes butterfly double with British Age Group record

Jacob Peters of Poole SC added a second butterfly title to his tally after narrowly winning the 100m Fly.

The 17-year old beat City of Manchester’s Sam Horrocks to the touch by a 0.02 seconds, clinching gold for his 52.92 effort and lowering his own national age group record in the process.

“My turn was awful but the rest of it was pretty good,” said Peters, who secured the Commonwealth consideration time in yesterday’s 200m Fly.

“I knew it was a close race. I could see the others alongside me and they really pushed me.

“If someone had told me at the start of the year that I’d break four British age group records, swim in two World junior finals, make a Commonwealth Games consideration time and give James Guy a good race, I wouldn’t have believed them.”

Horrocks took silver in 52.94, while Mount Kelly’s Italian teenager Frederico Burdisso took bronze in 53.00.

City of Sheffield’s Cameron Brooks-Clarke took the gold medal in the B final with a comfortable victory in his home pool. The 18-year-old touched in 54.47 for the win.
