Isabelle Goodwin dominates 12/13yrs 400m IM

Isabelle Goodwin won 400m IM gold with a dominant performance in the 12/13 Yrs final at the 2017 Swim England National Summer Meet in Sheffield.

The City of Leeds left the competition behind in the final, and was a full two seconds ahead of Ella Bainbridge in second, making it to the wall in 5:09.08.

Goodwin commented on her gold medal victory: “It feels really good. I think in the last 50m, the freestyle, I just decided I’m not losing this medal.

“I saw Ella near me and I just went for it, I think that helped to push me.”

Bainbridge of Cleethorpes took silver with a time of 5:11.18 and Ella Cooper, also of Leeds, took bronze with 5:11.98.

Anna Smail of Ellesmere College Titans took her club’s first gold of the competition in the 15yrs age group.

Smail was leading from the start, and just widened the gap over each lap that passed. She took the title in a time of 5:05.05, shaving just under a second from her PB set at last year’s event.

“It feels great to get gold and a PB,” said Smail, who won the British Summer Champs title over 200m Free last week.

“I always tend to do better in finals I think. That’s my first and last race, so it’s back to training now.”

Olivia Norman of Colchester took silver, clocking 5:05.96. Bronze went to Emily Milton of Romford town (5:08.17).

Ward smashes PB in men’s 400m IM

Ben Ward of Sevenoaks swam a massive personal best time, shaving almost ten seconds from his time set in April at the Basildon and Phoenix Easter Meet.

He clocked 4:50.80 to claim gold in the 13/14yrs age group.

Ward commented: “It feels really good to get gold. I wasn’t expecting much of a PB, which was unexpected.

“But obviously really good. I’m just going to enjoy a bit of a rest now and then back into training for the next season.”

Silver went to Stockport Metro’s Joseph Deighan (4:51.54) and bronze was claimed by Alex Rossiter-Barnett of Ellesmere College (4:51.69).

Jamie Scholes of Peterborough claimed his second medal of the day, having missed out to Harley Beentjes in the 200m free. Scholes touched in 4:37.34 to claim gold in the 17yrs 400m IM.

He commented: “It feels really good. I’ve just come off the back of British nationals, and I was at open water on Monday, so I was really pleased with this result.

“I’ve got two more events coming up on Friday, and this win has given me loads of confidence.”
