Joel Thompson lands golden double on day three in Sheffield

Joel Thompson scooped an impressive double gold on day three of the British Summer Championships 2017.

Having won the 16 Yrs 50m Breast title on day two in Sheffield, the Shiverers swimmer showed his versatility to open his session with 100m Freestyle gold.

Thompson was back on top of the podium later in the session after victory in the 400m Individual Medley.

The 16-year old hadn’t broken 54 seconds before over 100m Free, but blasted a PB 52.54 from lane 1 to win the final at Ponds Forge, upgrading from a bronze 12 months ago.

Having taken silver in the 400m IM last year, there was no stopping Thompson in the distance event this time round as he clocked a 4:35.75 PB to book lane 4 for the final, in which he stormed to gold in 4:31.63.

Edward Mildred wins third gold with 100m Free victory

Northampton’s Edward Mildred also moved his overall golden tally to three on the third day in Sheffield.

The 14-year old clocked PBs in both heats and final of the 13/14 Yrs 100m Free, taking the touch in the final in 53.44 to add to his victories over 400m Free and 200m Fly.

Given a few more metres, Mildred could well have added a fourth title in the 400m IM.

The teenager was closing with every stroke in the freestyle leg of the final, ultimately touching just 0.41 seconds behind Inverleith swimmer Angus Allison for silver in a PB 4:41.70.

English success across other age groups

The other age groups saw victories for Jacob Greenow and Fraser Minnican in the 17/18 Yrs and senior age groups respectively.

Taunton Deane swimmer Greenow lowered his lifetime best to 4:22.20 for his victory while Loughborough University’s Minnican defended his senior Summer Champs crown in 4:24.04.

City of Leicester’s Jay Newman was the first English swimmer home in the 15 Yrs age group, clocking a PB 4:38.68 for silver.

The senior men’s 100m Freestyle came down to the wire with just 0.01 seconds between gold and silver in a blanket finish.

Edinburgh University’s David Cumberlidge ultimately took the touch in 49.79, just ahead of Bath University’s Miles Munro.

Northampton’s Daniel Savage won the 17/18 Yrs 100m Free title, ducking under 51 seconds for the first time to win in a PB 50.93.

In the 15 Yrs age group, Millfield’s 200m Fly champion Huw Williams was the top English finisher, just 0.01 seconds behind Newport’s Kameron Clarke as he won silver in a PB 53.04.
