Katie Matts completes quickfire Summer Champs double

Katie Matts won her second gold of the 2017 British Summer Championships with victory in the 200m Breaststroke.

The Stockport Metro swimmer had nearly four seconds in hand as she dominated the senior final in Sheffield, winning in 2:26.54.

The 18-year old’s result came just 24 hours after a PB to win the senior 400m Individual Medley title at Ponds Forge.

The result also brought Matts her third 200m Breast title in as many years at the British Summer Champs, having won the 17/18 Yrs crown in 2015 and 2016.

This year’s 17/18 Yrs title went to Rio 2016 Olympian Georgia Coates as the City of Leeds swimmer clocked 2:27.54 to add to her 200m Free gold from the opening day.

There were also English golds for City of Bristol’s Lily Booker and City of Birmingham’s Charlotte Rigg.

Booker took nearly four seconds off her PB to win the 16 Yrs crown in 2:31.20 while Rigg improved from her silver last year to take the 15 Yrs title in 2:34.28.

Another Midlands swimmer, City of Leicester’s Carys O’Reilly, was the first English athlete home in the 13/14 Yrs age group, winning silver in 2:37.41.

Emily Large kicks off medal campaign with 50m Fly gold

Emily Large kicked off her medal campaign with gold in the 16 Yrs 50m Butterfly. The Newcastle swimmer won 10 medals at last year’s event, including four golds.

And the 16-year old looked in ominous form as she swept to her first title at this year’s event, setting a PB 27.13 for victory.

Poole’s Jasmine McCrea won silver behind Large, moving to third in the British 15 Yrs historic rankings with her PB 27.24 effort.

The swimmer at the top of those rankings, City of Derby’s Sophie Yendell, won gold in the 15 Yrs age group, stopping the clock on 27.60 in her final.

There were also English athletes on top in the 13/14 and 17/18 Yrs age groups.

Colchester’s Sophie Freeman became the second fastest British 13 year old of all time with a PB 28.15 to take the spoils in the youngest age group.

Meanwhile, Plymouth Leander’s Laura Stephens improved from silver last year to take 17/18 Yrs gold in 27.25, ahead of 16-year old City of Sheffield swimmer Kate Clifton’s PB 27.83.

University of Stirling’s Lauren Mills was the only English swimmer on the podium in the senior age group, winning silver with a PB 27.10.
