Molly Renshaw takes British record on day two in Sheffield

World champion Molly Renshaw took her second medal of the ASA National Winter Meet with a new British record in the 200m Breaststroke.

The Loughborough-based swimmer ducked under her previous record time by half a second, touching 2:17.98 for gold.

The Rio 2016 Olympian had already lifted the 200m Individual Medley title on the opening night in Sheffield.

Katie Matts of Stockport Metro, who was fastest in the heats, swam a new personal best time of 2:21.28 for silver. Renshaw’s Loughborough teammate Emma Day took bronze in 2:24.89.

Renshaw commented: “It’s nice to come here and swim with a little less pressure than last week. Hopefully this has got the momentum going for 2017, and I’m hoping my long course season will be just as good.”

Max Litchfield storms to victory in the 400m IM

Max Litchfield, fastest qualifier in the heats by five seconds, was unstoppable in the Men’s 400m IM.

The City of Sheffield swimmer carried on momentum from his 200m IM gold from day one, taking a second title. He was just over a second shy of his British record time – set to win silver at last week’s World Short Course Championships – as he came home in 4:01.28.

Fraser Minnican of Loughborough Uni took silver with a time of 4:10.91 and team mate Caleb Hughes claimed the final medal with a 4:12.96 effort.

Litchfield said: “I’m very pleased with that, I’ve come in here today and given it my all. I probably should have broken my record this week or last week, but I just couldn’t quite put that swim together. Hopefully I’ll get it next year.”

Beth Aitchison lowers PB for gold in 100m IM

Beth Aitchison of Loughborough Uni managed to put half a second between her and her rival in the Women’s 100m IM.

She was fourth fastest qualifier from the heats, but managed to take two seconds from her PB for victory in 1:00.35.

Second place went to Raquel Matos of Edinburgh Uni took silver, touching just outside her personal best in 1:00.95. Jane Brown of Newcastle took the bronze medal in a new British junior record time of 1:01.31.

Aitchison said: “I’m really happy with that. I haven’t really been focusing on IM, just concentrating on breaststroke, so it’s a bit of a surprise really. It’s great to have such a great team behind me.”

Calum Jarvis takes second gold in 100m Free

Bath Uni swimmer Calum Jarvis took the top spot in the Men’s 100m Freestyle, touching just outside his personal best time.

Seeming to have taken some confidence from his gold in the 100m Fly yesterday, Jarvis was almost a second ahead of the field. He touched in 47.91.

His Bath Uni team mate Jay Lelliott took his third individual silver of the meet in 48.74 while Loughborough’s Samuel Irvine claimed bronze (48.75).

Jarvis said: “100m Free is always a tough race, it’s so competitive. I was really close to my PB, but it was just good to be at the front of the field.”
