ParalympicsGB ready to take on the world

Swimming News

Tomorrow is the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and ParalympicsGB will have high hopes for their swimming squad.

The swimming team in Rio is really strong. There are veteran athletes looking to retain their titles, and swimmers making their Paralympic debuts.

Nova Centurion’s Ollie Hynd is one such veteran athlete. He currently holds Paralympic, World, European and Commonwealth titles. Hynd will be looking to build on the success of the IPC Swimming European Championships in Funchal, Madeira, where he secured three gold medals.

For Rebecca Redfern of Worcester and Ellie Robinson of Northampton this will be their first Paralympic Games. Both swimmers have been on form over the past 12 months. Redfern broke the SB13 world record in the 100m Breaststroke at the British Summer Champs. Robinson lowered the British record in the S6 50m Butterfly twice at the British Para-swimming International Meet in April.

Of the 31 athletes, over two thirds are English.

Furber excited about the team’s prospects

When the team was announced, Chris Furber, British Para-swimming Performance Director, said: “We have an exciting and capable team selected for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

At British Para-Swimming we have worked consistently on increasing the standards of our team. This is reflected in the selection process, and it’s a real positive to see 25 athletes achieving the time outright.

“We had an excellent trials that saw not only our experienced athletes stepping up but also 14 debutants fighting for and deserving their place on the team as well.”
