Sarah Vasey defends British Summer Champs 50m Breast title

Sarah Vasey underlined her class with a sub 31 effort to defend her senior 50m Breaststroke title at the 2016 British Summer Championships in Sheffield.

The City of Derby swimmer clocked 30.84 to take gold at Ponds Forge, touching out Loughborough’s Beth Aitchison on 31.33.

While it wasn’t a PB for the 20-year old, it was the showpiece senior performance of the night. Vasey’s effort in the final was the sixth time she has broken 31 seconds in her career and the third time this season.

Her PB of 30.62 from May would have won European gold in London earlier this year, while her time tonight would have seen her touch second in London.

While Vasey didn’t have the chance to swim 50m Breast at the British Champs this year, she did win silver in the 100m Breast. Her PB 1:07.50 from Glasgow sits joint third in the all-time British rankings.

Belonogoff and Anderson impress in 15 Yrs final

There was plenty of talent on show in the age group 50m Breaststroke finals as well, with English winners in all four finals.

Guildford’s Tatiana Belonogoff caught the eye in the 15 Yrs final, taking the touch in a PB 32.21. Belongoff had finished second 12 months ago, touching behind Ellesmere College Titans’ Freya Anderson.

Anderson was looking to add to her 200m Freestyle gold from earlier in the session and was in lane four for the final, having set a PB 31.90 in the morning heats.

But Belonogoff reversed the placings in the final, touching just 0.03 seconds ahead of the Ellesmere swimmer. Belongoff’s time from the final sees her move to fifth in the British 15 Yrs all time rankings while Anderson’s heat swim leaves her third.

Having finished fourth last year, RTW Monson swimmer Annabel Guye-Johnson jumped all the way to the top in the 16 Yrs age group, taking gold in 33.00.

Derventio’s Imogen Clark claimed the 17/18 Yrs crown in 31.23 while West Suffolk’s Angharad Evans set a PB 33.58 for victory in the 13/14 Yrs age group.

Evans is one of just three swimmers from West Suffolk at the 2016 British Summer Champs and the 13-year old came into the Champs with a lifetime best of 34.29.
