The Swim England Group Board

The role of the Swim England Group Board is to provide the strategic direction for the organisation and subsidiary companies. This includes its mission, vision and strategic objectives and monitoring of the implementation of strategic and corporate plans and budgets.

In this and all the areas set out in the terms of reference, the Swim England Group Board works with the Sport Governing Board to integrate strategies, plans and resource proposals.

Meet The Swim England Group Board Members

Here are the current members of the Swim England Group Board.

Mike Farrar CBE, FRCP, FRCGP (Chairman)

Mike has spent his career in the health service. He is currently an independent management consultant working with health and sports clients including NHS Confederation and the Football League Trust. He is committed to promoting health innovations and links between health and sport.

Stuart Cain BA, MBA (Independent Member)

Stuart is a senior executive with extensive experience in marketing, media and commercial affairs across sports and entertainment events and businesses. Currently he is Managing Director: Commercial Marketing with the NEC Group, which includes the Ticket Factory, and before that he has had executive marketing and commercial roles with Rangers and Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Clubs and responsibility for brand development at Bass plc.

Simon Johnson (Independent Member)

Simon is Chief Executive of the Jewish Leadership Council. His former roles include Chief Executive of Business in Sport & Leisure, Chief Operating Officer of the England 2018 World Cup Bid, Corporate Affairs Director and Company Secretary at the FA, Legal Director at the Premier League and Director of Rights and Business Affairs at ITV. Simon is also a Non-Executive Director of the Rugby Football League.

Sue Smith MBE (Director)

Sue has spent her career working for local government and has a wealth of experience in leadership, good governance and organisational transformation, and was recognised for her services to Local Government  in the 2018 New Year’s Honours with an MBE. Sue is currently Chairman of the Graven Hill Village Development Company, which is delivering the UKs largest self-build housing development. Sue is a Chartered Director and Fellow of the Institute of Directors.

Keith Ashton (Sport Governing Board Representative)

Keith is the CEO of S&P, the largest sports and leisure architectural practice in the UK. As well as working with the majority of the UK’s Local Governments to develop sports infrastructure projects, S&P also completed two of the 2012 Olympic venues and continue to work with OPLC on the QEII Park transition. Keith joined S&P in Feb 2001 becoming a Director in 2006.

Ian Mackenzie (Sport Governing Board Representative)

Ian is the East representative to the Sport Governing and a member of the ASA Board since 2006. Like many volunteers Ian became involved in swimming through his children and qualified as an advanced teacher. Ian as also been a qualified official and is currently a qualified licensed referee and regularly officiates at all levels of swimming events.

Bernard Simkins (Sport Governing Board Representative)

Bernard is the West Midland representative to the Sport Governing Board and a member of the ASA Board since Council 2011. As an active official and qualified referee Bernard has officiated at all levels of regional championships and continues to mentor new officials.

Jane Nickerson (CEO)

Jane joined the Swim England as Head of Administration in September 1997 from Metropole Hotels. Since that time, Jane has held a range of senior management roles within the organisation, and was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2009. Jane took on the role of Interim CEO at the beginning of August 2016 and was appointed to the role on 1 April 2017.
