English girls finish fifth at Mediterranean Cup

The ASA England Talent squad finished fifth overall at the 2015 Mediterranean Cup in Ostia after some impressive performances across the four events.

Having already secured a sixth place finish in the Free Combination, the English girls had the figures event to start day three.

Kate Shortman was the highest scoring of the English girls, placing 32nd on 73.4800. Isabelle Thorpe was 36th on 72.9200 while Sophie Freeman was the third best English performer, finishing 101st on 67.3778.

The finalists in Ostia were made up of the top six swimmers from Mediterranean countries and the top six swimmers from non-Mediterranean countries.

The English girls’ results ensured the Team and the Duet would both return for final performances. Meanwhile, Shortman was unlucky not to progress in the Solo after ranking 11th overall.

The pair pulled out all the stops with excellent height and precision to increase their routine total by two marks.

After progressing in eighth from the Duet Free prelims, Shortman and Thorpe maintained their position in the final. The City of Bristol pair improved on their prelim score by more than two points up to 73.6667.

Kate and Isabelle’s figures scores put them in the final

“Kate and Isabelle impressed with such convincing figure scores that they over took the Ukrainian duet to qualify for the duet free final,” said team manager Sarah Clarke.

“The pair pulled out all the stops with excellent height and precision to increase their routine total by two marks from prelims.

“This gave them an excellent final placing of eighth position closing the gap to seventh from five points to two. All of the squad and staff were extremely proud of their performance.”

The English Team also improved their performance for the final. They finished with the seventh best routine score of 71.2333 and placed eighth overall.
